Akron Ohio Minority Council: Mission & Goals

The mission of the Akron Ohio Minority Council is to empower the city’s minority communities through advocacy, education, and economic development.

The council was established in 1993 in response to the growing needs of the city’s minority population. The group is composed of representatives from the city’s black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American communities.

The council works to promote understanding and cooperation among the different minority groups in the city. It also advocates for the rights of minorities and works to improve their economic status.

The Akron Ohio Minority Council is a valuable resource for the city’s minority communities. It provides a voice for these groups and works to improve their quality of life.

Efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion benefit the entire city, not just its minority residents. A strong and vibrant minority community makes Akron a better place for everyone.

In recent years, the Akron Ohio Minority Council has been involved in the following initiatives:

Working with the city to create a minority business enterprise program

Helping to establish a citywide scholarship program for minority students

Advocating for changes to the city’s zoning code to promote diversity

Providing input on the city’s budget to ensure that minority needs are met

With the support of the Akron community, the Akron Ohio Minority Council will continue to be a powerful force for positive change. To prevent discrimination and reveal and dismantle structural racism, we must first understand what these words mean.

Diversity is often thought of as race or ethnicity, but it also includes gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. In other words, diversity is all the ways we differ.

Equity

Equity means ensuring that everyone has what they need to be successful. This includes access to quality education, healthcare, housing, and jobs. It also means taking into account the unique needs of different groups of people and making sure that no one is left behind.

Inclusion is about feeling welcome, respected, and valued. It’s about having a sense of belonging. It’s about being able to bring your whole self to work or school without fear of discrimination or harassment.

When we talk about equity, diversity, and inclusion, we are talking about creating a more just and equitable society for everyone. We are also talking about making our organizations more effective by tapping into the talents and perspectives of all our employees and students.

As the City moves forward, we will continue to work with our community partners to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive Akron. This is not only the right thing to do, but it is also the smart thing to do. A diverse and inclusive city is a strong city.
