The Akron city council has announced a new loan program specifically for minority businesses that have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an effort to support these businesses and help them stay afloat, the city is offering loans of up to $10,000 with no interest or repayment required for six months. After that, businesses will have two years to repay the loan at a low, fixed interest rate.
So far, the response from business owners has been overwhelmingly positive, with many already taking advantage of the program. This is just one more example of how Akron is committed to supporting its small business community during these difficult times.
The city mayor, who is black, said in a statement that the program was “a reflection of our values as a community.”
“We believe in supporting our small businesses, and we believe in lending a helping hand to those who need it most,” she said. “This program is one more way we’re living up to those values.”
If you own a minority-owned business in Akron that has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, please reach out to the city council for more information on how to apply for this loan program.
As of yet, there is no word on whether or not this program will be expanded to other businesses beyond those that are minority-owned. However, the city council says they are committed to finding ways to support all small businesses during these difficult times.
In the meantime, please visit our website for more information on how to support small businesses in Akron. So far seven partners have been selected to deliver technical assistance. They will be providing one-on-one business coaching, help with accessing capital, and more. We’ll continue to update this list as more partners are selected.

Every city council is made up of representatives from the city’s different wards. The city of Akron, Ohio is no different. The Akron City Council is made up of nine members, each representing one of the city’s wards. In addition, there are three at-large council members who are not affiliated with any particular ward.
The Akron City Council is responsible for a wide range of duties, including approving the city budget, setting tax rates, and voting on zoning changes. They also have the power to pass ordinances and resolutions, which can have a significant impact on the lives of Akron residents.
Without further ado, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the Akron City Council.
Pros:
The Akron City Council is responsible for a wide range of duties, including approving the city budget, setting tax rates, and voting on zoning changes. They also have the power to pass ordinances and resolutions, which can have a significant impact on the lives of Akron residents.
Council members are elected by the people and are therefore accountable to them. This means that they are more likely to listen to the concerns of their constituents and work to address them.
The council provides an important check on the power of the mayor. By working together, they can prevent the mayor from making decisions that would be detrimental to the city as a whole.
Cons:
The council can sometimes be slow to act on important issues. This can be frustrating for constituents who are eager to see a change in their community.
The nine ward representatives each have their own specific constituents they are responsible for representing. This can make it difficult for them to come to a consensus on city-wide issues.
The at-large members of the council are not affiliated with any particular ward. This means that they may not have the same level of investment in the city as a whole and could make decisions that are not in the best interest of Akron residents.
How To Be Better?
There are a few ways that the Akron City Council could be improved. One way would be to increase the number of at-large members on the council. This would help to ensure that there is more representation from all parts of the city.
Another way to improve the council would be to create subcommittees that focus on specific issues. This would allow council members to get more expertise on certain topics and make better-informed decisions.
Finally, the council could benefit from holding more public hearings. This would give residents an opportunity to voice their concerns and have a direct impact on the decisions made by their representatives.
Handling Tourism In Akron, Ohio
Tourists usually flock to the big cities when they come to Ohio. However, Akron is a hidden gem that has so much to offer visitors. From the gorgeous parks and nature trails to the many museums and historical sites, there is something for everyone in this city.
The problem is that tourism can sometimes have a negative impact on a city. This is why it is important for the Akron City Council to carefully consider how to best handle tourism in the city.
There are a few different ways that the council could approach this issue. They could choose to promote tourism by investing in advertising and marketing campaigns. This would help to bring more visitors to the city and boost the economy.…
The Racial Equity and Social Justice Taskforce (RE&SJT) was created in 2019 in response to the national climate of racial tension. The mission of the RE&SJT is to provide a space for dialogue, learning opportunities, and collective action around issues of race and social justice. The task force is made up of diverse community members who are committed to promoting equity and inclusion in Akron.
One of the goals of the RE&SJT is to create more inclusive policies and practices within the city government. To do this, the task force works with city officials to identify areas where disparities exist and make recommendations for change. The RE&SJT also engages in public education and awareness campaigns to promote understanding and support for equity and inclusion initiatives.
In addition to its work with the city, the RE&SJT also partners with local organizations to promote racial equity and social justice in Akron. These partnerships allow the task force to expand its reach and impact within the community. Some of the organizations that the RE&SJT has partnered with include the NAACP, Urban League of Greater Akron, and Kent State University’s Pan-African Studies Community Education Program.
The RE&SJT is committed to creating a more just and equitable Akron for all residents. Through its work, the task force strives to build a community that celebrates diversity and provides opportunities for all.
Local people have also been organizing around the issue of racial equity and social justice. One example is the Akron Ohio Minority Council, which was formed in 2017 in response to the police shooting of a young black man named Tyre King. The council works to promote understanding and communication between law enforcement and the minority community. They also advocated for changes to the city’s use of force policy.
Other groups, like Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) Akron, are also working to make the change at the local level. SURJ is a national network of people who are committed to taking action against racism in their communities. The Akron chapter works to educate and mobilize people to take action on issues of racial justice.
The city council is also making a task force on a school shooting. The goal of this task force is to make sure that our schools are safe and secure. There has been a lot of violence in our country recently and it is time to do something about it. We need to keep our children safe when they are at school. This task force will help us do that.
To look at the root of this problem, one has to change the perspective and see this through the lens of social justice. This means that all people are treated equitably and fairly, with no exceptions. It is the belief that everyone deserves to be safe, to have their basic needs met, and to be respected. It is the idea that we should all be able to live our lives without fear of violence or oppression.
Racial equity and social justice are about more than just race; they are about creating a society where everyone can thrive. To achieve this, we need to work together to dismantle systems of oppression and build ones that support everyone. We need to create policies and practices that promote inclusion, respect, and opportunity for all. And we need to educate ourselves and others about the issue of racial injustice so that we can be part of the solution.
Even the most advanced cities have disparities in a race. For Akron, it is evident that not all citizens are on the same level. The socioeconomic ladder does not provide the same opportunities for everyone, no matter what race they are. There is a need to close this gap so that everyone can have an equal chance to succeed.
The first step is acknowledging that there is a problem. It is only through acknowledgment can we start to address the issue. We need to have courageous conversations about race and social justice so that we can move forward together. This will require making some changes in how we live and work, but it is necessary if we want to create a more just and equitable society.
